Polished Perfection- Mad Men Styles

Oh, Mad Men!  I love you!

Let’s take a look at some polished styles of the late 1950s through the mid-somewhat late 1960s and what makes them era-specific.

Balenciaga 60s - AMAZING!

This is a beautifully polished silk dress by Balenciaga, Fall/Winter 1961-1962.

1st- dresses on women were a must in the late 1950s through the mid-1960s.  Only for sports or the most casual events were pants or shorts worn.  Unless you were a Beatnik.

Shirtwaist dresses were often worn as day dresses or school dresses as they were in the 1950s.  They buttoned up the front or back and had simple collars and necklines.  Dresses were nipped in at the natural waistline with fuller circle-type skirts with hemlines falling either just at the knee or below.  Dresses were often made of cotton, cotton seersucker, prima cotton, and Dacron polyester (which feels like a stiff cotton).  Patterns ran the gamut from solids to plaids to florals to bold colors.  These fashions were worn from the 1950s through the early-mid-1960s.  The shirtwaist dress changed drastically by the mid-late 1960s (check out our future post on this subject).

More formal dresses, church dresses or Sunday best dresses would have been made in polished cottons, raw silks, shantung silks, satins and velveteens.

As you may notice above, the silhouette of the dress in the early-mid 1960s may either be fuller or a bit more body-skimming as in the sheath or the jacketed sheath, each contributing to the femininity of the female form.

Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent brought the iconic sheath and shift dress into fashion focusing more on a woman’s curves.  Suits were often made in polished cottons, wools and even knit-wear and were often worn with the pill box hat and large sunglasses.

The silhouette changed entirely by the mid to late 1960s when mod came more into fashion and the feminist movement ensued.  More on that later!

Men, let’s not forget about you!  The Mad Men style for men was to be suited up in a sharp, well-fitted suit with small lapels, a tie (the width of the tie changed from skinny to fat the later the decade went along as did the length).  Men’s pant legs were tapered and fell to the tops of the shoes; they were often flat-front pants (not pleated).  Men often wore a hat like a fedora as had been the trend for some time.

Hello world! Costume Inspiration: Alice in Wonderland

HALLOWEEN COSTUME INSPIRATION #1 of Many:  ALICE IN WONDERLAND.  One of my favorite movies of all time.  This movie remake by Tim Burton was filled with colorful, interesting images.  The costuming was nothing short of phenomenal (even if the movie itself didn’t live up to the expectations).  Check out the following pic of some of Fringe Vintage’s talented friends and their take on the Wonderland gang (sketch club in Orlando, Florida). Alice’s dress, blouse and apron came from the closet of FRINGE VINTAGE.
